Test Method

Microscopy Using Red Compensator

Specimen Requirement

0.5 mL of synovial fluid, uncentrifuged EDTA or Heparin anticoagulated specimen, preferred.

If fluid collecton is not possible:
Smear specimen on a slide, or place a couple drops on a slide (depending on the specimen available). Allow the slide to dry and send in a slide holder. No coverslip is necessary as this will just fall off when the specmen dries. (Reference: Tim Timmerman M.D. MercyOne Dubuque 20220308.)

Specimens other than synovial fluid must be referred to a Pathologist.

Additional Specimen Collection Information

Transfer 1 mL of body fluid from the collection syringe to an EDTA purple-top or lithium heparin green-top tube. 

Performance

Completed same day the specimen arrives at the testing site.
