Test Code 058 Compatibility Test (Crossmatch)

Important Note

Adult: The phlebotomist must check the patient's armband and compare the patient ID number on the armband to the patient ID number on the requisition. The phlebotomist must sign the tube (preferred) or the requisition and indicate the date and time of collection as well as the patient ID number as transcribed from the patient armband to verify that they are the same.

Infant: Nursing must inform the laboratory of any previous transfusion or  transfusion history as well as any pertinent prenatal information (e.g.: rh incompatibility of mother). The patient must be wearing an armband with the correct identification. The phlebotomist must sign the requisition indicating date and time of collection as well as the patient medical record number as transcribed from the patient's armband.

Test Method

Antigen antibody agglutination; Ortho

Specimen Requirement

A 5ml EDTA purple-top tube is preferred.

 

7-10 mL red-top, 5 mL heparin green-top or 5 mL blue-top tubes are also acceptable. Serum and plasma gel tubes are not acceeptable. Micro specimen may be obtained wih a capillary collection device.

Performance

Testing is performed Monday through Sunday.

Routine orders: Typically completed within 4 hours after specimen arrives at the testing site.

STAT orders: 5 minutes once a a negative antibody screen has been resulted. Will take longer if the patient has a red cell antibody.

Reference Values

Compatible

If the patient has a positive antibody screen, an Expanded Compatibility test will be performed.
