The American Diabetes Association recommends that HbA1C results be reported along with a calculated Estimated Average Glucose (EAG). The new number is derived from the HbA1C result and is based on a standardized formula developed from the A1C-Derived Average Glucose study (ADAG) which confirmed and defined a linear relationship between estimated average daily glucose and HbA1C. It is intended to help healthcare providers communicate HbA1C results to patients using the same units of measure (mg/dL) that patients are familiar with from their routine whole blood glucose measurements.
EAG(mg/dL) = 28.7 x HbA1C - 46.7
CPT Code Information
83036 Chemistry: Hemoglobin fractionation and qunatitation; glycosylated (A1C)
NCD Frequency Limitations: It is not reasonable and necessary to perform glycated hemoglobin tests more often than every three months on a controlled diabetic patient to determine if the patient's metabolic control has been on average within the target range.
Useful For
Diagnosing diabetes
Evaluating the long-term control of blood glucose concentrations in diabetic patients
