Specimen Requirement

1 mL of urine is required.

Additional Specimen Collection Information

The first morning voiding is the best specimen. Specimens may be stored at room temperature for up to 8 hours. Specimens may be stored refrigerated for up to 72 hours or frozen. Specimens may only be frozen once.

Performance

Testing is performed Monday through Sunday.

Routine orders: Typically completed within 4 hours; Mercy DV and MA West within 24 hours

Expedite orders: Typically completed within 1 hour after the specimen arrives at the testing site.

STAT orders: Typically completed within 35 minutes after the specimen arrives at the testing site.

Reference Values

Expected or "normal" results are completely dependent upon the clinical circumstances.

  • Female: Positive Beta-hCG results may be obtained as early as 6 days after conception. Specimens containing 25 mIU/mL hCG will test positive.
  • Male: Healthy males should be negative.
