MA Cerner: Total Protein/Creat Ratio

Test Method

MercyOne:

Protein: Dye-Binding Colorimetric Method; Beckman
Creatinine: Jaffe Rate; Beckman

MA:

Protein: Enzymatic Colorimetric Method; Roche Cobas 6000
Creatinine: Kinetic Colorometric Method; Roche Cobas 6000

Specimen Requirement

2 mL urine is required.

Additional Specimen Collection Information

Random urine specimens should be collected in a plastic container.  No preservative required. Label the specimen appropriately with two identifiers, patient name and another identifier, (patient ID number, DOB, etc.) include date and time of collection. Urine specimens should be assayed within two hours of collection. If a urine cannot be run within two hours store refrigerated for up to 72 hours. Frozen samples are not acceptable.

Do not place specimen in a glass container.  Avoid hematuria or blood contamination.

Note: Increased levels of urinary protein may also be present following strenuous exercise or in the following conditions: monoclonal gammopathies, nephritis, diabetic nephropathy or urinary tract infections.

Performance

Testing is performed Monday through Sunday

Typically completed the same day the specimen arrives at the testing site.

Reference Values

<0.2

Reference value not established for children <2 years of age.

CPT Code Information

84156 Chemistry: Protein, total, except by refractometry, urine

82570 Chemistry: Creatinine; other source

Useful For

The total protein to creatinine ratio estimates the degree of proteinuria based on a single random urine collection. Increased amounts of protein in the urine may be seen with glomerular disease, over-flow proteinuria, urinary tract inflammation and urinary tract neoplasm. While the total protein/creatinine ratio can be used for screening or monitoring proteinuria in certain clinical situations, the 24 hour urine total collection remains the test of choice to measure true proteinuria.
