This test can only be ordered on patients being seen in the Mercy-Dyersville ER, Dyersville Family Practice, or a Mercy Dyersville Outpatient being drawn at the Mercy-Dyersville site.

The screening test for D-Dimer is performed at Mercy Dyersville site only.

Test Method

Fluorescence Immunoassay; Alere Triage D-Dimer

Specimen Requirement

Whole blood collected in an EDTA lavender-top tube.

Additional Specimen Collection Information

Invert the EDTA tube end to end 4 times to thoroughly mix blood and anticoagulant. The tube should be left stoppered until time of testing.

  • Specimen is stable up to 24 hours at room temperature or chilled.
  • Hemolysis: Not acceptable.
  • Lipemia: No significant interference up to 3000 ng/dL triglyceride.
  • Icteria: No significant interference up to 15 mg/dL bilirubin.

Performance

Testing is performed Monday through Friday.

Routine: Typically completed within 4 hours.

STAT: Typically completed within 30 minutes after the specimen arrives at the testing site.

Useful For

D-Dimer screen is used as an aid in the assessment and evaluation of patients suspected of having disseminated intravascular coagulation or thromboembolic events including pulmonary embolism. This test should not be used as absolute evidence for PE or DVT.
