Additional Specimen Collection Information

  1. Specimen Collection:
    1. Obtain the specimen using the Hologic Specimen Collection Kit. (This is the only acceptable collection device.) The specimen is obtained from the posterior fornix of the vagina during speculum examination. The polyester-tipped applicator provide in the specimen collection kit is inserted into the vagina and lightly rotated across the posterior fornix for approximately 10 seconds to absorb the cervicovaginal secretions.
    2. Once the specimen is obtained, carefully remove the applicator from the vagina and immerse the tip in the tube of buffer provided with the specimen collection kit.
    3. Break the shaft (as the score) even with the top of the tube. Align the shaft with the hole inside the tube cap and push down tightly over the shaft, sealing the tube.
    4. Label the tube with the patient’s name, date of birth and date and time of collection.
  2. Specimen Storage and Transport:
    1. Specimens that are not tested within eight (8) hours of collection must be stored refrigerated at 2-8oC and assayed within three (3) days of collection, or frozen and assayed within three (3) months. Store appropriately and avoid extreme temperatures.
    2. Transport specimens at 2-25oC, or frozen.

Performance

Testing is performed Monday through Sunday.
Routine: Typically completed within 4 hours after the specimen arrives at the testing site.
STAT: Typically completed within 30 minutes after the specimen arrives at the testing site.
