Specimen Requirement
Specimen collected in a sterile containter or Cultureswab.
Additional Specimen Collection Information
If aerobic culture and fungus culture are both ordered, collect 2 Cultureswabs. Label appropriately with patient name and two identifiers (patient ID number, DOB, etc.) [including source, date and time of collection]. Transport to the laboratory within 1 hour after collection.
Performance
Final Negative: After 4 weeks with no growth
Preliminary reports are called on positive cultures as soon as
the fungus is isolated.
Cultures positive for Histoplasma capsulatum, Coccidioides immitis,
Cryptococcus neoformans, Blastomyces dermatitidis, Sporothrix
schenckii are called to the nurse's station or physician office and
Epidemiology.
Reference Values
Negative for Fungus in 4 weeks.
