Test Method
Direct Unstained Wet Prep with Microscopy
Specimen Requirement
Collected by a physician or nurse using a vaginal speculum and swab. Place the swab in a tube containing 1 ml of sterile saline. Label the specimen appropriately with two identifiers, patient name and another identifier, (patient ID number, DOB, etc.) include specimen source, date and time of collection. Transport the specimen to the laboratory. It is recommended that testing be performed within 4 hours of collection.
Performance
Monday through Sunday
Typically completed within 4 hours after the specimen arrives at the testing site.
Reference Values
No Trichomonas, yeast, clue cells or sperm seen.
Typically a few epithelial cells and polys are seen with a background of mixed bacterial flora.
