Test Method

Manual; Agar Growth and Biochemical Identification

Specimen Requirement

Vaginal/rectal specimens collected using a sterile swab. Swab is placed into a Strep B Carrot Broth tube, break the swab shaft and leave it in the tube. Tightly close the cap. Once the broth is inoculated, do not shake, agitate or vortex the broth. Transport to the laboratory immediately.

 

Call the Microbiology Department (589-9991) to order the Strep B Carrot Broth.   Store the Strep B Carrot Broth in the refrigerator and protect from light. 

 

 

Additional Specimen Collection Information

Place the swab(s) in the Strep B Carrot Broth.

 

 

Label the Strep B Carrot Broth appropriately with two patient identifiers, patient name and another identifier (patient ID number, date of birth, etc.) include specimen source, date and time of collection.  Transport to the laboratory immediately to be incubated – DO NOT DELAY!

Performance

Testing performed Monday through Sunday

Typically completed 48 hours after specimen arrives at the testing site.
