Test Method
Immunoassay
Specimen Requirement
A 6-8 inch section of umbilical cord is required.
Additional Specimen Collection Information
- Drain and discard any cord blood.
- Rinse the cord segment exterior with normal saline or an
equivalent rinsing solution.
Important: avoid any contact between ethanol liquid or vapor and the umbilical cord. Also, do not store cord in formalin. - Pat the specimen dry, and place the umbilical cord segment into the specimen container.
- Place the name and id number on the USDTL requisition form and umbilical cord container.
- Sign the requisition form.
- Place the barcode sticker form the requisition form over the top of the matching umbilical cord container.
- Place the completed requisition form with tests ordered in the large pouch of the plastic specimen bag provided.
- Place the umbilical cor containter in the small pouch of the specimen bag, and seal the bag.
- Place the specimen bag in the cardboard box, close the box.
- Contact the courier for pickup.
- Umbilical cord specimens should be refrigerated in a secure area per Chain of Custody protocol until they are ready to be shipped. Transport at ambient temperature.

Performance
Routine:
- Screen test negative results are reported the day the sample is received.
- Screen test positive results are confirmed and reported in an additional 24-48 hours.
Reference Values
Negative for all constituents (Amphetamines, Cocaine, Opiates, Phencyclidine and Cannabinoids)
Cord samples have a window of detection for abused drugs equal
to or greater than that provided by meconium. Studies done in assay
development found a higher number of positive results in paired
meconium/cord samples for methamphetamines and marijuana.
