Test Method

Immunoassay

Specimen Requirement

A 6-8 inch section of umbilical cord is required.

Additional Specimen Collection Information

Umbilical cord specimens should be refrigerated in a secure area until ready to ship in accordance with chain of custody.

  1. The cord blood should be drained and discarded.
  2. Rinse the cord exterior with normal saline or equivalent.
  3. Place the cord section in the USDTL specimen container.
  4. Label the specimen container and requisition form with the patient name and id number.
  5. Place the bar-code sticker from the requisition form over the top of the matching umbilical cord container.
  6. Insert the completed requisition with test ordered in the large pouch of the plastic specimen bag.
  7. Place the specimen container in the small pouch of the specimen bag and seal the bag.
  8. Place the specimen bag in the cardboard box, close the box.
  9. Ship the sample without preservative at ambient temperature.

Performance

Routine: 

  • Screen test negative results are reported the day the sample is received.
  • Screen test positive results are confirmed and reported in an additional 24-48 hours.

Negative for all constituents (Amphetamines, Cocaine, Opiates, Phencyclidine and Cannabinoids)
 

Cord samples have a window of detection for abused drugs equal to or greater than that provided by meconium. Studies done in assay development found a higher number of positive results in paired meconium/cord samples for methamphetamines and marijuana.
